The 3d product modeling questions we get.
Real cost, timeline and process questions from brand teams shortlisting SMAPIT for 3d product modeling. Answered with the numbers and workflow we actually deliver against.
- 01
How much does 3D product modeling cost per SKU?
A simple hard-surface product model runs $200 to $800, and a complex or articulated one runs $800 to $2,500. Cost drivers are shape complexity, the number of materials, whether internal components need to be visible for exploded views, and whether the model needs a low-poly LOD for a Shopify configurator or AR viewer. Once the model exists it is a reusable brand asset. Every hero render, animation, AI ad variant or A+ module downstream renders from that one file.
- 02
How long does a 3D product model take to build?
A production-ready 3D model ships in 5 to 10 working days from CAD or reference. Simple hard-surface products with clean CAD land at the low end. Complex articulated products, fabric-heavy products, or products modeled from photos only (no CAD) run 2 to 3 weeks. Delivery includes the source scene file, PBR textures, and export in the formats you need (STEP, OBJ, FBX, GLB, USDZ).
- 03
What do you need from us to model a product (CAD, photos, sample)?
CAD, product photos with a scale reference, or a physical sample. Any one is enough. STEP, IGES or OBJ from the mechanical design team is fastest. Photos-only work well for on-market products where the source files cannot be shared. A physical sample plus photos is the safest fallback and lets us measure and colour-match against the real object. NDAs are signed before any files are shared.
- 04
Can you model a product from photos alone if there is no CAD?
Yes. If we have front, side, top and detail photos with a known dimension or scale reference, we can model to spec from photos alone. Reference-only modeling adds 2 to 3 days on the front for reference-gathering and shape cross-checks. For products with fine industrial detail (screw threads, embossed logos, textured grips) we may ask for a sample or macro shots to confirm. The result is production-ready for renders, animation, ads, configurators and AR.
- 05
Do we own the 3D source files after delivery?
Yes. In the SMAPIT engagement, the client owns the final assets at handover. That covers source scene files, PBR textures, rigs and format exports. This is different from many freelance and studio contracts, where the source file stays with the vendor and every revision is a new billable. Ownership means you can hand the 3D master to another vendor, extend the campaign in-house, or come back to us for the next range without re-modeling. Ask any studio or freelancer this question upfront.

Questions, answered.
The things brands ask before the first brief. Anything else, just email us.
Yes for FBX, USD, glTF/GLB, USDZ, OBJ and STEP. Gaussian Splatting is available on request for reference and cinematic use, though it does not yet slot into standard ecommerce workflows.
